Rob grew up in London and followed a varied path long before bridge became a defining part of his life. After Grammar school he spent time in both the City and the Civil Service, before taking a break to travel across Europe – a trip he still talks about with real affection. On returning home, what was meant to be a short-term role behind the wheel of a London bus unexpectedly turned into seven enjoyable years.
Life took a new direction when Rob bought a small shop, which allowed him to step back from full-time work and semi-retire at 45. Since then, he has gravitated towards the travel world, working mainly as a part-time tour manager and coach driver – roles that suit his calm manner, sense of humour, and ability to look after people.
Rob has been playing bridge for roughly two decades and is a familiar face at national congresses, where he competes regularly. He teaches beginners at his local club, always with the aim of making the game accessible and enjoyable rather than intimidating.
He is also a qualified county director and has overseen several county-level events. When hosting, Rob tends to lean towards card-play topics in his seminars, keeping things practical, digestible, and quietly confidence-boosting for players at all levels.
Rob’s approach is warm, patient, and unfussy. He knows that for some guests, a bridge holiday is a completely new experience, and he takes real pride in creating an atmosphere where everyone feels settled, supported, and keen to return.
When he isn’t at the bridge table, Rob enjoys travelling and reading – simple pleasures he never quite tires of.
Rob once took home a Scrabble trophy at a local club for the highest-scoring word of the year. His winning play – FETCHERS – landed across two triple word squares, scored a 50-point bonus for using all seven tiles, and notched up an impressive 230 points. It took a few attempts and a moment of realisation that the he was sitting on a double letter score, but the final tally was worth the effort.
