A Yorkshireman by birth, Colin had already lived on The Wirral, in South Africa and in Wales before returning to Yorkshire to complete his schooling. Three years at Durham university left him with a degree in Geology and Geophysics but no interest in the subject.
A chance advert in a newspaper led to a job at Tesco’s head office in Cheshunt where Colin became an Office Space Planner – initially using a drawing board, and later CAD. Whilst living in Hertfordshire he met his lovely wife Marilyn, and before they knew it they had three wonderful children!
They relocated to Somerset in 1998 and have been there since. The children have now left home (and there are even a few grandchildren). After retiring a few years ago they have been doing all the usual activities that retirees do – bridge, bowls, volunteering, gardening and travelling.
Colin learnt to play bridge at school, age 13 – over 45 years ago. As well as playing at local clubs, he’s played in many county competitions, and has represented Somerset in the Tollemache and Pachabo competitions on a number of occasions.
He became an EBU qualified TD about 25 years ago, and has been on the EBU panel for over 15 years, being now a Senior Congress Director.
Colin likes to think that he is an efficient and firm, but fair TD. Outside of the bridge room he is more fun and can often be seen playing beach games with the guests.
Other hobbies and interests
As well as the previously mentioned interests, Colin is a keen DIY-er and he and Marilyn are currently building their own house.
Colin and Marilyn were volunteers at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in France.
